Class this week

I wanted to reach out and remind you that presentation this Tues. is "Teach Us Something". Personally, my advice is to remind your child to keep in simple (please don't stress yourself out) & remind your child 2-3 minutes so we don't go over into our fun review time. Topic suggestions could be how to draw a picture, paper airplane folding, how to make a certain food item, a dance step, a song, an instrument, all about your favorite book or tv show, a craft skill (ie. knitting, crochet, duct tape), sport skill...well, the list could be endless.

Snack this week is Jessica.

Also, I wanted to mention our new classroom and find out how you and your child feel about it. I was thinking that we could try the room again this week. But I think I might move the table around a little bit. I felt like I was very, very far away from some of my kiddos and I am use to having them at arm's length. But if the kids were very unhappy or you felt like it was tomb please let me know. I was more than happy in our tiny room with the round table but I did like having a little more room last week for our book bridge during science.

I also wanted to ask about a little class Valentine's party in February. I was thinking that maybe everyone could bring in a little snack or treat to share and we could exchange cards. Let me know what you think.

And finally, thanks for letting your kids be a part of my life. I am still enjoying them so much and can't believe how much they have grown this year. They continue to amaze and impress me.

Back to Class

Hi Everyone,

I am busy gearing up for class next week.  I can't wait to see my kids and find out all about their Christmas breaks.  It was nice to have some time off but I am excited to get back into the groove of things. 

Don't forget that we will have a presentation on Tues.  The topic is your Christmas Break.  That means you can bring in a gift, show pictures, talk about something you did or somewhere you went or something special that happened. 

Remember to keep the presentation to 2-3 minutes, practice at home, and maybe even prepare a notecard with 5-8 key word points to present to the class.  And visuals are always a great thing. 

Also, this semester we will have a presentation each week.  I have prepared a presentation schedule with topics for each week.  But these are just a suggestion so if your child wants to present something different that is totally okay.  I don't want it to be stressful but I would like them to practice at home.

Some big news...we will have new classmate this semester.  Will Reeves, from Brian Zielny's class, will be a new addition.  I am very excited to have him...he is a smart cookie and it will be nice to have another sweet boy to add to our already fabulous group.    It might be a tight squeeze with 9 kids around the table but I am sure that we can make it work.

Don't forget to have your kids bring their ring binder do class.  I will continue to have several handouts per class that I would love to have them keep organized to help them study at home.

Also, please feel free to ask me any questions you might have about Memory Power (1-2 subjects), Memory Excellence (3 or more subjects) or Memory Master.  I would love to encourage you to work towards one of these levels with your kids.  I have such smart cookies in my class that I know they are totally capable.  I think a few subject suggestions to learn would be Math or Timeline because they are the same year after year, Latin this year repeats itself 1& 2nd semester and English is also a great one to learn Prepositions, Helping Verbs & Linking Verbs.

2nd Semester Presentation Schedule

Presentation Schedule

Week 13 Christmas Break – Bring a gift you received, a picture you created or a photo that was taken over Christmas break., tell the class about what you did on your break.

Skill: Articulation – Speak clearly and enunciate every word so your audience can understand you.

Week 14 Missionary or Biblical Figure – Give us a short biography of a missionary or Biblical figure of your choice. As always, props or costumes are welcome. What I really want to see is PREPERATION! Practice speaking clearly, while taking glances at your outline, in front of your classmates.

Skill: Key Word Outline – BE PREPARED!!! Have a note card with an opening sentence, 5 to 8 other points (written as key words), and a closing sentence.

Week 15 Geography Report – Give a report on geography. Tell us about one of the locations we have studied in weeks 1-24, tell us about the town where you live, find out about some local landmarks in your community, pretend you are on an adventure – you can go anywhere in the world you want (Where do you want to go? What would you do when you got there? This place can be real or make believe), bring in a souvenir from a place you have been and tell us about the place where you received it, or tell us about one of your vacations.

Skill: Poise – Be calm. Stand tall and still. Calmly and confidently continue your presentation EVEN if something goes wrong.

Week 16 Teach us – Tell us more about any timeline cards, a science question, a history sentence, your favorite science experiment, your favorite drawing exercise or anything else you would like to teach us.

Skill: Confidence – Trust and rely in God. Focus on knowing your material really well. Practice your presentation for your family or friends. Remember to keep your presentation to three minutes.

Week 17 History – Choose one of the following: Tell me about a Greek or Roman god, pick a timeline card and tell us more information about that subject, what is your favorite event in history, tell us about your history (Where were you born? When? Who are your grandparents? From what country or region is your family?).

Skill: Eye Contact – Make thoughtful, friendly eye contact with the members of your audience.

Week 18 Children’s Picture Book – Narrate your favorite children’s picture book while showing the pictures. Read 5-8 pages (or 2-3 min worth.) Take your time with each page! Leave time for your gestures and expressions. (arms starched out showing something huge, and fingers showing something small; a happy, shocked or sad expression on your face; marching in place or bobbing your head pretending to sleep – the possibilities are endless. Continue to keep your poise!)

Skill: Gestures – Use body movement and facial expressions to enhance your presentation.

Week 19 Artist – Pick one of the artists we used in weeks 13-18, or pick one of your own, and give a report using the skills from week 13 & 14.

Week 20 Topic Time - Tell us something about the tin whistle, your favorite sport, a valuable lesson you have learned, a story that you have made up, or your favorite animal.
